During his tenure at OSU, one Kaeding’s most notable achievements is his research in ACL injury treatment, prevention, and outcomes.

By: Michael Barbella
The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) has installed a new president, Christopher C. Kaeding, M.D., for a one-year term.
Kaeding currently serves as the Judson Wilson Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine. He is also executive director of The OSU Sports Medicine Center, and chief of the Division of Sports Medicine at OSU Department of Orthopaedics.
“Dr. Kaeding’s expertise in orthopedic sports medicine and his commitment to personalized care make him uniquely qualified to lead AOSSM into the future,” AOSSM CEO Greg Dummer said. “His leadership in ACL injury treatment and prevention at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has shaped national care standards, and his extensive research and numerous accolades, including being rated in the top 10 percent for patient satisfaction and named to ‘America’s Top Doctors’ list, highlight his dedication and impact.”
A graduate of Northwestern University, Kaeding earned his medical degree and completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at Northwestern University. He conducted his fellowship in sports medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland.
“It has been my highest honor and I am quite humbled to assume the role of president of AOSSM, an organization whose mission, membership, and leadership I’ve always viewed with the utmost respect and admiration,” Kaeding stated after brief installation ceremony at AOSSM’s annual meeting in Denver earlier this month. “I will do all that I can to be the best steward of the Society’s resources, as well as enhance its leadership in the orthopaedic sports medicine arena through strategic alliances and exceptional educational programs.”
During his tenure at OSU, one of Kaeding’s most notable achievements is his research in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury treatment, prevention, and outcomes. A frequently invited lecturer at national and international medical societies and national meetings, Kaeding’s research includes more than 200 peer-reviewed publications. Prior to his appointment as AOSSM president, Kaeding held leadership positions in professional societies throughout his career, including the ACL Study Group and the AOSSM Board of Directors.
Kaeding has been honored with numerous awards for his medical achievements including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Kappa Delta Award and is the two-time recipient of the AOSSM’s O’Donoghue Award for clinical research. He also served as a Godfather of the AOSSM’s Traveling Fellows tours to the Asia Pacific Knee Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Society.
Kaeding succeeds Dean C. Taylor, M.D., who assumed the title of immediate past president. Prior to assuming the role, AOSSM presidents serve as vice president and then president-elect.
The AOSSM 2024-2025 Board of Directors includes:

AOSSM originally grew out of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Committee on Sports Medicine. Organized in 1964, the Society aims to be the premier global, sports medicine organization for orthopedic surgeons and other professionals who provide comprehensive health services for the care of athletes and active people of all ages and abilities. Rosemont, Ill.-based AOSSM cultivates evidence-based knowledge, provides extensive educational programming, and promotes emerging research that advances the science and practice of sports medicine.
